～羅伯特‧弗洛斯特專場：順從的問題～

If you noticed, everyone started off with their own stride, their own pace. 不知道你們注意到了嗎？每個人開始都有自己的步伐，自己的節奏，

taking his time. He knew he’ll get there one day. 不著急，知道自己總有一天能到呢？

You could see him thinking, “Is this right? It might be right. It might be right. 你可以看到他們會想：這可能是對的？這可能是對的？這可能是對的？

I know that…Maybe not. I don’t know. driven by a deeper force. We know that. All right. 我知道就是這樣。也許不是，我不知道，有一種更深的驅動力，這我們知道，好了…

Now, I didn’t bring them up here to ridicule them. 我說這些並不是要嘲笑你們，

I brought them up here to illustrate the point of conformity. 我說這些是為了說明順從的問題。

The difficulty in maintaining your own beliefs in the face of others. 說明堅持與眾不同的信仰的困難。

Now, I see the look in your eyes like, I would have walked differently. 你們有些人，你們的眼神好象在說"我本來可以走得不同"，

Well, ask yourselves why you were clapping. 那麼問問自己剛才為什麼拍手，

Now we all have a great need for acceptance. 沒錯 我們都有一種被人接受的需要，

But you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own. 但是你們必須堅信自己的信仰是獨特的，是你自己的，

Even though others may think them odd or unpopular. 哪怕別人認為它們很怪或者很討厭。

Even though the herd may go, “That’s ba-a-a-a-ad.哪怕一群人都說"那太差了"。

基廷老師引用羅伯.佛斯特名詩未竟之路：

The Road Not Taken／ Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in the wood and I…

I took the one less traveled by.

And that has made all the difference.

羅伯.佛斯特說過：

兩條路在樹林中分岔，

我選擇走的人少那一條，

這就導致了所有的不同。

I want you to find your own walk right now, your own way of striding, pacing any direction. 現在 我希望你們也找到自己的路，找到自己的步伐，步調，任何方向，任何東西都行。

Anything you want, whether it’s proud, whether it’s silly, anything.不管自負也好，愚蠢也好，什麼都行。

Gentlemen, the courtyard is yours. 各位！這個院子是你們的，

You don’t have to perform, just make it for yourself.你們用不著表演，完全為你自己。

Swim against the stream.敢於逆流而上。

 

～詩社成員把妹奇招～

死亡詩社開會時，男生用來讚美女生的詩歌，他雖然說是自己寫的，但其實是莎士比亞的《你的長夏永不凋謝》。

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?／ William Shakespeare

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

你的長夏永不凋謝／

能不能讓我來把你比作夏日？

你可是更加可愛，更加溫婉；

 

讚美另外一個女生用的詩，拜倫的《她在美中行》，極富浪漫氣息：

She walks in beauty／ Lord Byran

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that ‘s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes:

她在美中行／拜倫

她在美中行

像靜夜萬裡無雲，繁星滿天。

一切明暗交織的美，

在她的容顏和雙眸中匯合。

 

～仲夏夜之夢～

《仲夏夜之夢》雖然不是純粹的詩，但句子美如詩歌，Nile唸的結尾這一段很符合現實中他面臨到的困境：

A Midsummer Night’s Dream／ William Shakespeare

If we shadows have offended.  如果我們的出現冒犯了各位…

think but this and all is mended.  請原諒我們的過失

That you have but slumber’d here while these visions did appear.  就當我們出現的時候 你們在這兒睡了一覺

And this weak and idle theme, no more yielding but a dream.  這場小小的鬧劇只不過是一場夢境

Gentles, do not reprehend.  各位，請不要過於怪罪

If you pardon, we will mend.  如果允許 我們會悔過

And as I am an honest Puck, if we have unearned luck,  我是一個誠實的小鬼，如果我們有幸逃過懲罰

now to ‘scape the serpent’s tongue,  我們會很快改過自新

we will make amends ere long; else the Puck a liar call.  不然你就叫我是個騙子

So, good night unto you all.  好了，祝各位晚安

Give me your hands if we be friends,  請把手伸給我，如果我們是朋友

and Robin shall restore amends.再次請求你們的寬怨

Nile死後基廷老師看Nile記事本中梭羅的詞句：

 

～送別基廷老師～

從學校的迂腐角度及推卸責任的態度，基廷老師必須為Nile的死負責。

電影最後，基亭老師要離開教職，學生們記取「要用不同的角度看事情」的師訓，站到書桌上送別他們心中的Oh ,captain ,my captain!!

(看到這一幕大概沒有人不落淚的)

＜哦．船長，我的船長＞是惠特曼為紀念林肯總統而作，

大鬍子林肯在當時尚未有「族群平等」的觀念時，以廣闊的胸襟企圖變革，猶如掌舵的船長引領平民向前走。

基亭老師的眼光及胸襟同樣領先當代，所以希望學生們稱呼他為Oh ,captain ,my captain而不是老師，

以下是Oh ,captain ,my captain!全詩：

Oh ,captain ,my captain!／ Walt Whitman

Oh Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done,

The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,

While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;

 

But Oh heart! heart! heart!

Oh the bleeding drops of red!

Where on the deck my Captain lies,

Fallen cold and dead.

 

Oh Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;

Rise up -for you the flag is flung -for you the bugle trills,

For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths-for you the shores crowding,

For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

 

Here, Captain! dear father!

This arm beneath your head;

It is some dream that on the deck

You’ve fallen cold and dead.

 

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,

My father does not feel my arm , he has no pulse nor will;

The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;

From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;

 

Exult, Oh shores! and ring, Oh bells!

But I, with mournful tread,

Walk the deck my captain lies,

這裡，船長！親愛的父親！

你頭顱下邊是我的手臂！

這是甲板上的一場夢啊，

我們的船長不作回答，他的雙唇慘白、寂靜，

我的父親不能感覺我的手臂，他已沒有脈搏、沒有生命，

我們的船已安全拋錨碇泊，航行已完成，已告終，

勝利的船從險惡的旅途歸來，我們尋求的已贏得手中。

 

歡呼，哦，海岸！轟鳴，哦，洪鐘！

可是，我卻輕移悲傷的步履，

在甲板上，那裡躺著我的船長，

已倒下，已死去，已冷卻。

注一：惠特曼(Walt Whitman)是很有八卦聊的大詩人：1全家幾乎都是瘋子或智慧不足，獨獨出了他一個全美國最有名氣的大詩人。2有兩個哥哥，一個名字是喬治‧華盛頓，另一個叫做湯瑪士‧傑佛遜，他們都發瘋了。(He had two brothers one named George Washington Whitman and the other one Thomas Jefferson Whitman. They both became insane.)
